The Coast Guard is no exception to any other branch of the armed services who serve this country. Their motto “Semper Paratus” meaning “Always Ready” describes the willingness of this branch of the United States Armed Forces to do what needs to be done. They are the only military branch that has a maritime law, which covers foreign and domestic waters and a federal regulatory agency as a part of their missions.
During times of peace the United States Coast Guard (USCG) is under the Department of Homeland Security and if need arises during wartime can be changed to operate under the Department of the Navy. The USCG, like the other branches of the Armed Forces creates custom challenge coins that are presented for actions above and beyond.
For instance, the Coast Guard Sector from Portland Oregon has created their own coin that has the official seal of the USCG in the center on the front surrounded by the words honor, respect, devotion to duty. The back of the coin contains the word “Excellence” printed in bright red letters in the center. The outer circle has “United States Coast Guard Sector” written at the top with “Portland Oregon” displayed at the bottom.
Who are the United States Coast Guard Sectors
A Sector is a shore-based operational unit of the USCG. They provide a rapid, coordinated response to emergencies, whether they are natural or man-made. They have daily operations which include enforcing marine safety regulations, security and environmental protection. They also respond to any maritime disasters.
If you are an officer looking for the perfect USCG coin to give the men in your command for a job well done, consider having a challenge coin produced. A custom coin will generally cost half of what an off the shelf coin costs and will certainly be more relevant to the mission. Choosing the one that makes the statement you want to make is the special part of giving and receiving the U.S. Coast Guard challenge coin.
