Roots serve many responsibilities for tree growth. It supports the tree by absorbing nutrients and minerals as well transferring moisture. Often times we wonder how trees would not grow for an entire season and then shoot up for the next year. The reason for this is that the time and soil condition is not favourable for the root to grow. The plant cannot make and establish a root system. This structure is a basic fact that sustains life of the plants. More active tree roots grow in the surface to three feet of soil underground commonly it extended up to 12 inches. The nutrients found in the soil determine the growth of the roots. Poor soil made roots to grow closer to the surface. Roots grow all the year round and ceases when the temperature lowered.
There are two basic types of roots. The non-woody or also known as the white roots or feeder roots are mostly found above the ground and a few inches in the ground. These roots are result for an active growth of perennial plants. Its main function is to absorb minerals and other nutrients that are found mostly below or in the surface. These roots do not live long enough like the woody roots. As they mature and it turns brown as the outer layer die. There are cases to which that this non woody roots live and thickens as time passes. In due time it will be part of the woody roots.Different kind of trees takes up a variety of system just to support life. A deciduous tree, have many small root hairs which takes an extended surface and in return take more nutrients absorption. In some plants and trees it is not root hairs that grow but mychorrhizae instead. These organisms are fungi that live together with the tree feeder roots. Generally, people would think that if another life form is living on a tree would cause a non favourable effect; in this case it is mostly on the positive side. Mychorrhizae do not harm the tree but instead provide benefits to the tree. The union of the plants and the fungi is very advantageous to most trees.
The woody roots are what we think as the lower trunk of the tree. It’s the larger portion of the roots. They form close to the base of the root and the root collar. It mainly supports and gives the tree its framework. It supplies the tree with water and mineral intake as well as carbohydrate storage. The woody roots differ in many varieties of tree species. The growth of these roots is radial and horizontal. These parts can live and are located below from 8-12 inches and can extend up to four to 7 more the drip line of the tree.
